Melee currently lags behind ranged in PoE 2

If you have consumed time playing Path of Exile 2 and are familiar with both melee and ranged playstyles, you have likely noticed a stark contrast in the experience they offer.

This disparity lies not merely in the mechanics of play, but in the ultimate results achieved. Overall, spellcasters and other ranged builds hold a dominant advantage in terms of both map-clearing efficiency and survivability.

For instance, ranged builds centered on Spark skill allow players to unleash massive damage over a wide area while moving at high speed, instantly wiping out enemies before they can even get close.

Additionally, crossbow builds benefit from exceptional critical hit scaling, while grenade builds leverage powerful skill synergies and high base damage to create devastating damage output chains.

In contrast, traditional melee classes or builds relying on maces or two-handed weapons often feel clunky and fragile during combat; because they must engage enemies head-on, they are forced to absorb the full brunt of direct physical and elemental attacks.

While Path of Exile 2 currently features some effective melee playstyles, such as Monk, many of their skills possess semi-ranged characteristics and extended strike ranges; furthermore, the class boasts high mobility and the ability to rapidly close the gap to enemies.

In other words, the reason these standout melee classes or builds feel so good to play is essentially because their gameplay incorporates ranged or mid-range combat elements, rather than relying on the inherent advantages of true melee combat.

Imbalance within melee builds

The fact that the overall experience pales in comparison to ranged playstyles is only one reason for the decline of melee builds in PoE 2; in reality, there is also significant imbalance within the melee category itself.

Within the classification of melee skills in Path of Exile 2, there is a stark disparity in gameplay experience between single-target striking skills and AoE / slam strike skills.

Although single-target skills are often designed with superior damage scaling and a higher damage ceiling against individual targets, they struggle in actual combat due to a lack of AoE damage, making it impossible to effectively clear out swarms of enemies.

Moreover, many enemy types in PoE 2 move extremely fast. Since single-target skills lack mechanisms for instantly dashing into close range, players often find themselves in the frustrating position of desperately chasing enemies without being able to land a hit.

Consequently, almost all melee players gravitate toward area/slam strike skills. These skills leverage wide hit zones and crowd-control effects to efficiently clear trash mobs or stun bosses, thereby boosting the efficiency of farming PoE 2 currency.

Over-reliance on skill gem levels

Another systemic issue facing melee builds in Path of Exile 2 is that damage output relies too heavily on skill gem levels, which in turn leads players to neglect weapon crafting.

More specifically, in most current melee gear setups, the damage boost provided by skill gem levels far outweighs that of other attributes. As a result, when selecting gear, players are compelled to prioritize items that feature modifiers increasing melee skill levels.

This creates a trade-off: if you want to maximize damage scaling from skill levels, you might have to sacrifice other crucial utility stats like resistances, health, or attack speed, and for melee builds, efficient enemy elimination is essential for survival.

This dynamic also diminishes the value of high-base-damage weapons for melee builds; even a mace with near-perfect base stats might ultimately underperform compared to a standard weapon that grants +3 to melee skill levels.

Issues with skill control feel

While yield is one factor in a build's overall value, the feel of the skill during actual combat is another critical consideration. This is evident across various melee skills and mechanics in PoE 2.

Take Earthquake for example. When paired with the right support gems and gear, the skill boasts incredible damage scaling in the endgame. However, the issue lies in the time and delay between initiating the attack and the subsequent aftershock explosion.

This means that if you use Earthquake in high-tier maps or boss fights requiring frequent movement, the delay could leave you vulnerable to being swarmed by enemies.

In fact, similar issues affect skills like Rolling Slam; its fixed attack duration makes it difficult to integrate smoothly into fast-paced combat.

That said, if you have played Gemling Legionnaire, you might have noticed that its mechanics can significantly boost attack speed, effectively compressing the delay associated with certain melee skills.

However, we believe this shouldn't be the primary solution for addressing melee skill delays, nor should Gemling Legionnaire be nerfed as a result. Instead, the baseline fluidity of melee skills themselves should be improved.

Potential optimization strategies

Duelist has already been confirmed as the first class to be added to PoE 2 in version 1.0, and it brings distinct melee characteristics. This signals the arrival of a host of new melee mechanics, skills, and weapons, which will help break the mold of currently restricted melee playstyles.

On the other hand, it would be best for the development team to optimize melee builds before the 1.0 launch, specifically addressing the issue where they are easily interrupted or knocked down while dashing to close the distance, so that melee players can exert greater control over the pace of combat.

Undoubtedly, there are still many hurdles to overcome to ensure Path of Exile 2 is absolutely perfect at launch, but the issues surrounding the melee playstyle should be prioritized; after all, if ranged builds dominate from the outset, the long-term outlook for the full release does not look promising.

In Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5, Breach is one of the most worthwhile mechanics to farm. It is fast-paced, highly rewarding, and extremely satisfying. All you need to do is blast through monsters and pick up a large amount of Divine Orbs.

Although the sheer number of monsters makes this mechanic somewhat risky, it also means the potential rewards are extremely high. Even without pairing it with any other mechanic, its currency and item rewards can still reach S-tier.

Why Is Breach So Strong?

In PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, the official team added Viridian Wildwood to the game. This mechanic provides a huge boost to Breach. It allows you to run empowered Breaches that can produce large amounts of PoE 2 Divine Orbs and other high-value rewards without using Delirium.

You can still use 200% Delirium to farm Breach, but it is generally better to save 200% Delirium maps for other strategies or use them to run Simulacrum, which is usually the better option. The reason is that Viridian Wildwood provides Yellow Wisps.

It also provides Purple Wisps and Blue Wisps, but Yellow Wisps are particularly important because they give rare monsters additional Modifiers, directly increasing the quantity of their drops. Breach itself generates a large number of rare monsters, so these two effects create a very powerful multiplicative interaction.

Sacred Bloom

To start this strategy, the key item is Sacred Bloom, which comes from Ritual. You simply select a map you want to run on Atlas and use Sacred Bloom. It affects the selected map and all maps connected to it. Ideally, look for an uncompleted map with four connections. City maps are even better, but they are not mandatory.

Keep in mind that Sacred Bloom cannot be used on areas with Delirium Fog or on maps that have already been completed. Sacred Blooms also cannot be stacked in your inventory. Although you can look for other uses, using them to run Viridian Wildwood is currently the most effective option.

Once you enter the map, immediately head into Wildwood, start collecting Wisps, and kill as many monsters as possible. On average, a good Wildwood run can provide around 3,000 to 7,000 Wisps.

The different Wisps have the following effects:

• Blue Wisps: Give normal monsters a chance to become Magic Monsters.
• Yellow Wisps: Give rare monsters additional Modifiers.
• Purple Wisps: Increase Rarity.
• Sacred Wisps: Provide all three effects above and give monsters in the map a chance to become bosses.

After that, clear all Breaches in the map, kill as many monsters as possible, pick up the drops, and move on to the next map. One useful trick is that after destroying Breach Hands and killing enough monsters to stabilize Breach, you can quickly clear monsters around the outer edge before returning to the center to deal with the rare monsters.

Also, in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, a Breach will only release around five monsters at a time. Even if ten or twelve rare monsters would normally appear simultaneously, you will only face five at once. This helps reduce server load and keeps the mechanic from becoming overly difficult.

Breach Rewards

The rewards from farming Breach do not come solely from currency drops inside the map. The other half comes from Catalysts. Lower-end Catalysts come from Breach Passive Tree, while higher-end rewards include Breachstones. Each map drops a considerable number of Breach Splinters, and a Breachstone is worth around 2 Divine Orbs, making it a reliable source of income.

Some Catalysts are highly valuable, especially Sibilant Catalysts and Reaver Catalysts, which are used for Jewelry. Their Refined versions are even more valuable.

Another underestimated source of rewards is Essence of the Breach. Each one is worth around 1.25 to 1.5 Divine Orbs, and they are fairly common. You can add a large number of Essence Monsters to the map. If they spawn near a Breach, they have a high chance of dropping Essence of the Breach.

Breach Passive Tree

In Breach Passive Tree, you first need to decide which type of Wombgift you want to receive more often. If you are crafting items or want to gamble on valuable Amulets, Minion Belts, or Caster Rings, you can choose the corresponding type. However, Lavish Wombgift is generally the most consistent option because it provides more currency.

Key passives include:

• Essence Transference: Gives Essence Monsters near Breaches a chance to drop Essence of the Breach.
• Moment of Risk: Adds more monsters and rare monsters when stabilizing a Breach, increasing the number of rare monsters from 2 to 4.
• Shape the Chains: Increases the power of rare Breach monsters, making them a major target for investment.
• Reality Wound: Unstable Breaches take an additional 10 seconds to close after the timer fills.
• Frantic Invasion: Increases the chance of encountering Vruun and provides more drops.

The remaining Breach passives are also very important, so you should take as many of them as possible. They provide a steady source of currency. With these passives, Breach can compete with Abyss and Expedition.

Atlas Passive Tree

On the main Atlas Passive Tree, Essence of Ruin and Essence of Opulence are usually selected because they provide consistently valuable rewards.

Overlord's Domain can increase the number of Essences. Mary Spirits are also useful because Spirits can possess rare Breach monsters.

Another key passive is Corrupted Lattice Duplication, which gives Corrupted Essence Monsters a 25% chance to be duplicated when released. Because of this, you should always keep Exalted Orbs, Orbs of Alchemy, and Vaal Orbs in your inventory.

Use Orbs of Alchemy to modify white Strongboxes, Exalted Orbs together with Inexplicable Alchemy to give Essence Monsters additional Essences, and Vaal Orbs to corrupt Essence Monsters. Although there is a small chance of turning an Essence of the Breach into something worthless, it is worthwhile most of the time.

Maps

For maps, this strategy mainly runs eight-mod Waystones. The recommended Master is Doryani. Based on the number of explicit Modifiers on the map, he provides increased Effectiveness, Rarity, and a higher chance of additional Modifiers.

Doryani's Improved Calibration increases the effects of the map's prefixes and suffixes. If the monsters in the map become too strong, you can also use Stitch the Flesh to increase your chances.

Later in the league, you can consider switching to Volatile Connection and gambling on additional Modifiers or monsters that drop Fracturing Orbs. Disengaged Safeties is also very strong because it increases the area's Irradiated level, which is especially important for high-level Wombgifts.

Tablet Modifiers

For Tablet Prefixes, Effectiveness and Item Rarity are the most important. Other acceptable options include Pack Size, Rare Monsters, Monster Rarity, and Essences.

For Suffixes, Hive Blood and Wombgift Quantity are suitable for Hive maps, but they are not part of the main strategy. Wombgifts having a chance to increase the drop tier is also suitable for Hive maps.

Look for Waystones with at least two additional Rare Monsters modifiers along with one or two other good modifiers, then use an Ancient Infuser to corrupt them and push them to five modifiers.

In PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, Unstable Breaches already provide an abundance of currency through their base drops. You can also gamble on the equipment generated by this mechanic. If it produces an item with top-tier modifiers, it can be worth dozens of Divine Orbs.

Driven by Omen of Light and other high-value Abyss drops, the approach has shifted from chasing specific items to a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes overall returns and resource efficiency. Let's take a look at the changes to Abyss content in Patch 0.5.5 and how to build an effective farming setup.

What's Different About Abyss in Patch 0.5.5?

Patch 0.5.5 introduces several enhancements to Abyss mechanic.

Ghastly Relics now affect all large Abyssal Chests spawned within Pits, rather than just the final chest; additionally, of Champions suffix on Abyssal Tablets has been buffed, increasing the number of spawned rare monsters from 1-2 to 2-3. The introduction of Abyssal Ravines further increases the likelihood of consistently encountering Abyss content within maps.

These changes have shifted the focus of Abyss farming toward Abyssal Depths. Recent player testing indicates that while obtaining Omen of Light in standard maps has become more difficult, Abyssal Depths have emerged as a crucial source. Meanwhile, high-value drops like Cranium have raised the potential profitability of Abyss farming strategy.

Core Mechanics

Omen of Light is an extremely valuable currency item. When active, it ensures that the next use of an Orb of Annulment removes only a Desecrated modifier. This effect is highly prized for high-end gear crafting.

In Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5, the acquisition method for Omen of Light has changed: any rare monster within Abyssal Depths has a chance to drop it, regardless of faction. In contrast, within standard maps, only monsters belonging to Amanamu faction - specifically those bearing Amanamu's Void Lichborn modifier - can drop Omen of Light.

It is worth noting that monsters affected by Amanamu's Void are surrounded by black smoke. If you kill the monster while it is still inside the smoke, you will only obtain an Omen of the Liege; you must lure the monster out of the smoke before killing it to have a chance at obtaining other Abyssal Omens, including the Omen of Light.

Therefore, the primary advantage of choosing Amanamu faction is that it covers both sources of the Omen of Light: regular maps and Abyssal Depths.

Atlas Passives and Map Configuration

As established, the acquisition efficiency of Omen of Light in Abyssal Depths was significantly increased in version 0.5.5. So, how should you configure your Atlas passives and maps to maximize returns?

Atlas Passives

First, select Jado as your Atlas Master; his Spycraft focuses on map enhancements, Tablet effects, and rewards from Abyss chests.

Regarding Atlas passive tree, prioritize the following nodes:

• Unexpected Mission: A must-have node for corrupted maps; it further boosts map rewards.
• Partial Translation: Provides up to a 40% increase in Tablet effects, significantly boosting overall map returns.
• Mysterious Gifts: Increases the drop rate of Cryptic Keys, which are used to open Abyssal Troves.
• Ancient Activations: Improves chest quality and increases the spawn rate of rare chests.

Within Abyss Atlas passive tree, selecting the Amanamu faction node is the top priority. Other key passives include:

• Scattered Pits: If your Tablet already has a modifier granting a 10% effect boost for every closed Pit, this node offers additional chances for Heart of the Well drops.
• Forest Biomes: Increases the number of rare monsters.
• Water Biomes: Increases the number of currency chests.
• Rarity-related nodes: Prioritize nodes that boost item rarity and monster rarity.

Map Preparation

For map Waystones, prioritize stacking item rarity and monster rarity; aim for at least 55% item rarity and 25% monster rarity. Item rarity primarily boosts the map's base rewards, while monster rarity further increases the chance of high-value drops. If you are on a limited budget, you can lower the monster rarity slightly, but abandoning it entirely is not recommended.

Regarding Tablets, the core objective for this Abyss farming strategy is to increase Abyss density, the number of rare monsters, and overall drop quality; using 3-4 Tablets is recommended. Regarding modifiers, prioritize attributes that directly boost map returns - such as item rarity, monster rarity, tablet effectiveness, and additional Abyss encounters - while ensuring at least one Abyssal Depths modifier is included to increase the chance of accessing Depths.

The of Champions suffix for Abyss Tablets is particularly noteworthy, as it causes Abyss to spawn 2-3 additional Rare Monsters within the map.

It is recommended to keep the total cost of Tablet configuration within the equivalent of 2-3 Omens of Light to ensure the overall cost-efficiency of your farming runs.

Practical Gameplay and Operational Tips

Map Selection

Prioritize the city map due to its layout and the available space for Tablet configurations. Once inside, progress along the Abyss crack and close the Pits sequentially; if your Tablet includes relevant modifiers, closing a Pit can further enhance the effects of the Abyss monsters.

Abyssal Depths

If an entrance to Abyssal Depths appears after Abyss crack collapses, prioritize entering it. Rare Monsters here have a chance to drop Omens of Light, making this a crucial source of profit for this farming strategy. Use a Cryptic Key to open any large Abyssal Chests you encounter.

Kill Priority

In actual gameplay, prioritize Rare Monsters with Abyss modifiers, followed by Rogue Exiles, and finally clear out ordinary monsters. Pay special attention to the location where you kill Amanamu's Void monsters; failing to do so could result in missing out on Omen of Light drops.

Overall, Abyss mechanic in PoE 2 0.5.5 has evolved from a simple hunt for Omens of Light into a comprehensive farming system centered on Abyssal Depths, Rare Monsters, Abyssal Chests, and high-value drops.

Its strengths lie in its straightforward gameplay and diverse revenue streams, while still offering a high profit ceiling. However, since access to Abyssal Depths and high-value drops involves RNG, actual returns can fluctuate significantly. As long as you manage Tablet costs and adjust your configuration based on market prices, this Abyss farming strategy remains a solid, reliable choice for the current patch.
