Path of Exile 2 Gamescom 2026: What Will Be Announced at Opening Night Live?
Gamescom 2026 will take place from August 26-30, 2026, and for Path of Exile 2 players, this event is far more important than a regular offline convention. The official organizers will not only participate in Gamescom but have also specifically reminded players to pay attention to Opening Night Live.
This kind of preview easily leads to the guess that they have some truly noteworthy content prepared. It's worth noting that Gamescom 2026 coincides with the near end of Path of Exile 2 Early Access, while ExileCon will be held in early November this year, where a significant amount of information related to 1.0 official release is expected to be revealed.

Gamescom is unlikely to reveal all the major content at once, but it's also unlikely to only bring some minor updates. Let's predict what POE 2 will announce to attract more new players.
Swords and Duelist
If Gamescom 2026 aims to attract both new gamers and existing PoE 2 players, then Swords and Duelist are clear choices. Swords are the most easily understood fantasy weapon by a broader gaming audience; the developers don't need to explain complex mechanics or spend time explaining what a new system actually is.
They only need to show a character wielding a giant sword, quickly clearing monsters in Path of Exile 2, at Gamescom - that's enough to create a visual impact, and the audience will understand what they're trying to convey.
Swords will naturally make Duelist the focus of discussion. Players have been anticipating Duelist for a long time, and the developers must demonstrate what Melee and Swords can actually do in PoE 2. For veteran players, seeing Duelist officially unveiled will certainly be a pleasant surprise.
Act 5
My second prediction is Act 5. Compared to other content that requires extensive explanations of game systems, Act 5 is much more intuitive for a broader gaming audience.
This is a crucial piece of content in PoE 2 that we haven't truly experienced yet, and a long time has passed since its initial reveal. The final version is likely to differ completely from what we remember and imagine.
Act 5 offers a wealth of material for demonstration, including new boss fights, monsters, story beats, areas, Path of Exile 2 Currency, and NPCs. The developers don't need to spend a lot of time explaining Atlas and Ascendancy; a single exciting boss fight is enough to tell the audience: this is Path of Exile 2.
It would be even more logical if Gamescom demo included Act 5. We could see Act 5 at Opening Night Live first, and then experience a portion of it ourselves in Gamescom demo. This would be a completely new experience for both newcomers to PoE series and veteran players.
Patch 1.0
The third prediction is the official release date of Path of Exile 2 Patch 1.0. Originally, ExileCon seemed more suitable for announcing the full details of 1.0 release, but Gamescom Opening Night Live has a much larger audience.
In fact, Early Access release date for PoE 2 was previously announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live, so using Gamescom again to announce this important milestone isn't unprecedented.
If the official team wants to let more players who aren't closely following PoE 2 know that the game is about to enter version 1.0 and will be free to play, then Gamescom is clearly a better fit than ExileCon.
A short release date trailer, along with some previously unrevealed bosses, areas, or cinematic elements - even just about a minute - can achieve excellent promotional results, while ExileCon can handle a more comprehensive announcement of PoE 2 content.

Patch 0.5.5
Jonathan Rogers has confirmed that Path of Exile 2 will release Patch 0.5.5, so the question isn't whether it will appear at Gamescom, but how much content they plan to reveal at Gamescom.
Patch 0.5.5 may introduce new mechanics and potentially involve adjustments to Atlas Masters, Ascendancy Classes, Skills, or existing class balance. If POE 2 aims to keep players engaged before the official 1.0 release, Gamescom presents a suitable opportunity to announce Patch 0.5.5.
However, Gamescom is unlikely to release full patch notes directly. A more plausible scenario is a preview of some content, announcing the release date, or a short gameplay teaser.
Classes
Currently, Path of Exile 2 class roster still has some noticeable gaps. Shadow is one such class that hasn't been proclaimed, and Daggers and Traps haven't yet become fully usable content for players.
Previously, some PoE 2 showcases had already hinted at Shadow and Daggers, so a formal demonstration at Gamescom isn't out of the question.
Shadows are well-suited for large-scale gaming events, and like traps, they are easily understood ARPG elements. Furthermore, titles like Diablo Rogue have proven the powerful appeal of this type of class.
If PoE 2 team can showcase a representative Traps or Master Trap spin gameplay, it could certainly leave a lasting impression. They don't even need to reveal the entire class; showcasing one or a few skills, sword gameplay, or unique items, accompanied by a short animation, would be enough to generate buzz.
Path of Exile 2 team might announce multiple pieces of content at Gamescom 2026, grouping them into a single trailer. For example, they might first showcase Swords, then have Duelists appear in Act 5's Gameplay, followed by partial information about Patch, and finally leave more content to be revealed at ExileCon 2026.
This way, we can generate enough buzz at Gamescom 2026 without revealing all the content of ExileCon beforehand.

It is only natural to seek higher returns in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5 endgame, but fixating on a specific meta strategy can often lead to a worse mapping experience.
Ultimately, what truly determines your returns and experience includes your perception of supply-and-demand shifts, your preference for farming mechanics, your investment costs, and how well your build fits the situation.
Current Endgame Landscape
Following PoE 2 endgame overhaul, almost any mechanic can yield substantial returns.
In trade leagues, consistent engagement and scaling up the difficulty allow you to earn significant PoE2 currency from any mechanic.
However, the issue arises when a large number of players flock to the same mechanic and copy the exact same setup; supply increases, and profit margins are diluted.
Just because others make money with a specific setup doesn't guarantee you'll achieve the same results by copying it; your own judgment remains crucial.
Profiting from Supply and Demand
Players likely realize that if they avoid farming a specific mechanic in Path of Exile 2, they will probably have to spend more resources to acquire items exclusive to that mechanic.
For instance, items like Omens of Light and Potent Liquid Ferocity command high prices because demand is high while the steady in-game supply remains low.
In SSF (Solo Self Found) mode, however, you cannot simply acquire these items from the market; you are forced to farm for them yourself by engaging with the specific mechanics that yield them.
Each mechanic offers its own exclusive, valuable items: Atziri's Temple can yield currency like Vaal Infusers and Vaal Cultivation Orbs; Delirium offers Liquid Emotions; and Breach provides special gear and Catalysts.
However, prices fluctuate; if a particular playstyle becomes popular in PoE 2, the associated rewards often see a price increase.
Identifying what the player base needs most during the early league phase can give you a profit edge.
However, in the late game - when prices have risen across the board - constantly chasing price trends is often not worth the effort for most players, especially those with limited daily playtime.
Instead of forcing yourself to grind mechanics you dislike, it is better to switch things up when you get bored; this actually makes it easier to stick with farming in the long run.
Consider Net Profit
Players should also note that a well-configured Tablet and Waystone setup can significantly boost your returns.
In PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, running City Maps with Delirium fog is very powerful, but you must factor in variables like solo vs. group play, clear speed, Tablet costs, and setup time.
Take Expedition, for example: additional random modifiers can increase the number of Waystone affixes, boosting item rarity and monster pack size, but the cost can also be extremely high.
If you are playing solo, a heavy investment doesn't necessarily guarantee higher net profit; conversely, a six-player group can share costs and rewards, making the strategy more efficient.
Even if you are desperate for a chance to drop powerful items like Mageblood or Headhunter, you shouldn't blindly ramp up your investment without first weighing the costs against your available resources.
Build Compatibility Matters
Your character's strengths in PoE 2 will determine how smoothly a farming strategy plays out for you. Not every build is immediately capable of handling 200% Delirium or high-difficulty Expedition encounters.
A common strategy in Abyss right now involves using Amanamu's Void to lure monsters out of the black smoke before killing them, thereby increasing the odds of obtaining Omens of Light.
If you kill them while they are still inside the black smoke, you are more likely to get Omens of the Liege instead.
Damage over Time builds (like Poison or Bleed) can easily kill monsters accidentally while they are still in the smoke, whereas an Ice Shot build offers more control and is less likely to run into this issue.
On the flip side, Damage over Time builds excel at slowly whittling down elite monsters with massive health pools in high-intensity Expedition encounters, a task that might prove difficult for an Ice Shot build.
So, even if you have mastered the hottest farming strategies in the current PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, they might not necessarily be right for you; you need to have a clear understanding of your own build.
Farm Based on Your Preferences
Ultimately, the choices you make in the game should align with what you enjoy; as long as you are willing to invest time and ramp up the difficulty, the various mechanics will reward you.
There is no need to obsess over which strategy yields slightly more PoE 2 currency per hour. If you enjoy running Atziri's Temple, then run Atziri's Temple; if you prefer Abyss content, then farm Abyss.
If you relish the process of careful planning and optimization, try mixing strategies: experiment with optimizing your Tablet configurations and calculating your investment versus returns.
Of course, there is no need to force yourself if that doesn't appeal to you. Finding a farming rhythm in Path of Exile 2 that you can stick with for the long haul, and executing it both sensibly and efficiently, is the most reliable way to build wealth.
Patch 0.5.5 offers numerous endgame paths, each capable of yielding excellent results. Just choose a mechanic that keeps you engaged and adjust as you go; your profits and enjoyment are sure to follow!
In Path of Exile 2, Keystone passive skills can be a love-hate mechanic; while they offer powerful benefits, they also come with severe downsides.
This dynamic often leads to misconceptions: you might dismiss a Keystone because its drawback seems too harsh, overlooking the fact that its positive effects can more than compensate for the cost.
In the current PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, Avatar of Fire is one such easily misunderstood Keystone. Let's clear up these misconceptions and look at how to use this passive skill effectively.
Misconceptions about Avatar of Fire breakdown
The description for this PoE 2 Keystone states that it converts 75% of your Physical, Lightning, and Cold damage into Fire damage, but restricts you to dealing only Fire damage.
Based on a superficial reading and calculation, if your character has 100 points of base non-Fire damage, taking Avatar of Fire would result in dealing only 75 points of Fire damage, a 25% loss.
If that were the whole story, Avatar of Fire would be pointless; however, the development team wouldn't introduce such a counter-intuitive or self-defeating mechanic.
In reality, Avatar of Fire isn't useless; rather, it requires specific skill and gear combinations to leverage Path of Exile 2's complex damage calculation mechanics and actually boost your damage output.
Damage calculation with Avatar of Fire
Generally, damage calculation in Path of Exile 2 involves seven steps, but only the first three are directly relevant to Avatar of Fire.
The first step is base damage generation. This step aggregates your character's base values, including weapon damage, the skill's base damage, and added damage provided by gear.
It is worth noting the distinction between Increased Physical Damage and Added Damage on weapons: the former applies only to the weapon itself, whereas the latter factors into the skill's damage conversion process.
The second step is damage conversion. At this stage, PoE 2 processes all conversions inherent to skills and gear, as well as Gain percent of Damage as Extra Damage modifiers. This is also the step where Avatar of Fire primarily comes into play.
As for the third stage, more and increased types of modifiers are applied, significantly amplifying the damage.
Beyond helping you understand how Avatar of Fire functions, these damage calculation steps should also offer insights into rerolling gear modifiers. Achieving the ideal modifiers often requires investing a significant amount of PoE 2 currency to roll repeatedly.
Combining Ignite mechanic with specific skills
To achieve massive damage output with Avatar of Fire in Path of Exile 2, the key is to combine it with Ignite DoT.
As a damaging ailment, Ignite deals fire damage over four seconds to affected enemies. However, the effect does not stack; consecutive hits merely refresh the duration, and the system only applies Ignite instance with the highest damage.
Based on this, the fire damage dealt per second by an Ignite instance is approximately 20% of the fire damage that triggered it, meaning a single Ignite application deals a total of 80% of that fire damage value.
Extending the duration or increasing Ignite intensity yields greater total returns, so you need to maximize your single-hit fire damage. To achieve this, you should pair Avatar of Fire with skills that offer massive single-hit damage bonuses.
For this purpose, we first recommend Plasma Blast. This skill delivers slow but extremely high single-hit damage, capable of generating impressive Ignite DPS.
Alternatively, consider High Velocity Rounds; it boasts powerful single-hit physical/projectile damage that, once converted, easily triggers high-damage Ignites.
How to maximize the effect of Avatar of Fire?
If your PoE 2 character's damage composition is disorganized (involving multiple elemental types), percentage-based fire damage nodes on the passive skill tree will only affect a small fraction of your total damage, resulting in very low actual benefit.
However, once you convert all your damage into fire damage, unlocking relevant passive nodes will further amplify your character's total damage, and modifiers that boost elemental damage will achieve 100% efficiency.
If you apply a curse to enemies, the effect of reducing their fire resistance will apply to your full DPS, rather than just a portion of the damage.
By combining this with Added Fire Damage Support or resistance-inversion mechanics, you can drive the fire resistance of high-resistance bosses into negative values, effectively doubling your final damage output.
Available gear
Beyond specific mechanics and skills, pairing Avatar of Fire with certain PoE 2 gear can further maximize your gains.
For instance, equipping Guiding Palm Scepter or Flame Shrine Scepter in your weapon slot provides modifiers that grant additional fire damage.
Flame Shrine Scepter, in particular, allows elemental damage dealt to nearby enemies to be calculated based on their lowest resistance value, effectively bypassing defenses that rely on high fire resistance.
Another key piece of gear is Blistering Bond Ruby Ring. Its core modifier alters the calculation logic for Bleed, allowing your fire damage to contribute to the intensity of Bleed effect, thereby dealing double damage.
In traditional Warcry or high-damage single-hit PoE 2 builds, equipping Blistering Bond and allocating Avatar of Fire allows a single heavy strike to deal devastating pure fire damage while simultaneously triggering a standard Ignite DoT effect.
Ultimately, this Ignite DoT and Bleed DoT act on the enemy simultaneously; by doubling the damage-over-time output, this combination results in substantial total damage.
When is it right to unlock Avatar of Fire?
If you find the prospect of fully utilizing Avatar of Fire complex, you can use the following guidelines to determine whether this keystone passive skill suits your playstyle before deciding to invest in it.
First, you need to determine whether your primary damage-dealing skill boasts a high damage multiplier per hit (ideally exceeding 300%) and whether your actual combat style relies heavily on hit-and-run tactics or a rhythm of infrequent, heavy strikes.
Second, consider whether you plan to heavily stack nodes and modifiers for Fire and Elemental damage within your talent tree and gear.
If the answer to these questions is yes, then Avatar of Fire is well worth incorporating into your build during Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5!
In Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5, a unique Warrior build combining Blistering Bond, Self-Ignite, and Oil Grenade is emerging. It transforms the previously support-oriented and board-flooding Oil Grenade into a core damage dealer, leveraging the defensive mechanics of Smith of Kitava to achieve a unique map-clearing playstyle of self-ignition and burning while moving.
Core Mechanics
The cornerstone of this Oil Grenade Warrior build is Blistering Bond Ruby Ring. Its core affixes are Fire Damage also Contributes to Bleeding Magnitude and Bleeding you inflict deals Fire Damage instead of Physical Damage.
This means that fire damage amplifies the intensity of both ignite and bleeding damage ailments, allowing Herald of Ash and Herald of Blood to function simultaneously, resulting in overlapping fire spread and bleeding propagation during map clearing.
It's important to note that Avatar of Fire conflicts with Blistering Bond. Avatar of Fire converts all damage into fire damage, preventing the character from dealing physical damage and thus preventing bleeding from triggering. Therefore, it's not recommended to choose Avatar of Fire when equipping Blistering Bond. This build requires maintaining a certain level of physical damage to sustain bleeding triggers, while maximizing the benefits of fire damage through other means.
Self-Ignite mechanism is achieved through Molten Carapace and Self-Immolation passive. When the character is ignited, Self-Immolation reflects the ignition back to themselves, while Molten Carapace provides 50% increased Armor and 50% increased Damage while ignited.
Smith of Kitava's passive ascendancy skill, Heatproofing, renders the character unaffected by damaging ailments. This means that self-ignition doesn't cause actual damage but continuously triggers the buffs from ignition.
Core Equipment Configuration
Chest Armor
The chest armor must be of normal rarity, as Smith's Masterwork only allows normal rarity chest armor. Prioritize Ornate Plate or similar high-armor base materials. For affixes, prioritize% increased Armour and Life to further enhance overall defense and increase life pool.
Weapons
Siege Crossbow is the primary weapon in this build, with core affixes including:
- +3 to Level of all Grenade Skills: Significantly increases the base damage of Oil Grenade.
- Additional Grenade: Increases projectile count, significantly improving the coverage and clearing efficiency of Oil Grenade.
- High Physical Damage: Provides a foundation for damage conversion and overall output.
- Elemental Damage: Further enhances the fire damage system.
Among these, additional grenade is particularly important, directly impacting the coverage and clearing feel of Oil Grenade.
Jewellery
Blistering Bond Ruby Ring is the core equipment of this build. Its unique mechanics determine the synergy between Fire Damage and Bleed, forming the foundation of the entire damage system.
Xoph's Blood Amber Amulet further enhances the fire damage system. Its effect is: Enemies in your Presence have Elemental Exposure, while also providing life and fire resistance, making it valuable for both offense and defense. Combined with Blistering Bond, this further amplifies the benefits of fire damage to the overall DOT system.
Since this Oil Grenade Warrior build has high requirements for Blistering Bond, Xoph's Blood, and Siege Crossbow, the investment in PoE 2 currency needs to be carefully planned during its development. It is recommended to prioritize acquiring core mechanic gear rather than aiming for perfect affixes on all gear from the start.
Skill Configuration
Main Skill: Oil Grenade
In Path of Exile 2, the basic effect of Oil Grenade is to throw a grenade, which spreads oil and ignites the ground upon explosion. In this build, it simultaneously serves as the ignition source, the bleed trigger source, and the main damage source. The recommended support gem configuration is as follows:
- Bleed III: 100% chance to inflict Bleed, a prerequisite for Blistering Bond to convert into fire Bleed.
- Ignite III: Increases ignition chance and ignition damage.
- Fire Attunement: Converts a portion of physical damage into fire damage, increasing the base fire damage value.
- Encroaching Ground: Expands the burning ground area of the fuel bomb.
- Sealing Flame II: Increases ignition damage.
Support Skills: Herald of Ash and Herald of Blood
Herald of Ash provides fire damage spread and overflow, while Herald of Blood allows the bleed effect to spread between enemies. Together with Bursting Plague and Poison III, they can create a chain of continuous damage spread. It's important to note that the spread of Bleed from Herald of Blood is also affected by the fire conversion of Blistering Bond; what actually spreads is fire Bleed.
Defensive and Buff Skills
- Wind Dancer: Provides dodge to armor conversion and a small amount of rage generation. Combined with Iron Reflexes: converts all dodge into armor.
- Blasphemy combined with Elemental Weakness: Reduces the elemental resistance of nearby enemies.
- Precision and Vitality: Provide hit chance and health regeneration.
In-Game Performance
This build is extremely simple to use in practice. Upon entering the map, simply throw Oil Grenade towards the enemy. The oil will automatically ignite the ground upon landing. Ignited enemies will trigger the Blistering Bond's fire bleeding effect, while Herald of Ash will spread the ignition to surrounding enemies. Because Heatproofing grants the character immunity to damaging ailment, self-ignition does not cause actual health loss, and Molten Carapace's 50% increased damage when ignited effect remains active.
The character's survivability comes from multiple stacks of damage reduction. Once geared up, the character can easily withstand significant damage and weave through enemy hordes, melting enemies one by one with continuous fire bleed and ignition.
Deck Positioning and Future Prospects
From a positioning perspective, this build is suitable for players who enjoy sustained damage scaling and tank-style pushes. Its map clearing efficiency is considerable once geared up, while single-target damage against bosses relies on the stacking of Oil Grenade and the synergy of fire resistance reduction. Compared to traditional Warrior melee builds, it sacrifices some burst damage for stronger sustained output and survivability.
This Oil Grenade Warrior build is already playable in the current PoE 2 0.5.5, but its true potential may be realized in 1.0. According to leaked information, Xoph's Blood and Infernoclasp Plate Belt will receive significant buffs in 1.0, and the Blistering Bond mechanics are expected to be further adjusted. Additionally, the addition of sword-type weapons in version 1.0 may provide this build with more weapon options, no longer limited to crossbows.
For players who want to familiarize themselves with Blistering Bond and Smith of Kitava synergy before PoE 2 1.0, this build is a template worth investing time in. With subsequent patches adjusting related unique and ascendancy nodes, its strength is likely to increase further.
In Path of Exile (whether the 1 or 2), map rewards are closely tied to how much you invest into a strategy. Some strategies require a significant amount of currency to set up, but they can also generate far greater returns than other methods.
In PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, Azmeri Spirit Strongbox is one such strategy. It takes a long time to prepare, and sometimes you may even need to abandon an entire map. However, once a Sacred Spirit appears in the map, you can see an enormous burst of loot.
Azmeri Spirit Strongbox Core
Simply put, this strategy starts by having Spirits possess Strongboxes. Every time a possessed Strongbox is opened, Spirits can continue multiplying. However, this chain reaction only occurs when a Sacred Spirit appears.
Azmeri Spirits appear as small floating points of light throughout the map. They are usually yellow, purple, or blue, while rarer orange Spirits can occasionally appear. You only need to look for an orange Spirit. If there is none, simply abandon the map.
There are two types of Sacred Spirits:
- Spirit of the Cunning Fox: Increases monster rarity.
- Spirit of the Spring Hare: Allows possessed monsters to revive after death and further generate Spirit-related effects.
To make Spirits multiply indefinitely, you need the Atlas Keystone Passive Sacred Sap. Its second option causes monsters possessed by a Sacred Spirit to also be possessed by another random Spirit.
Therefore, once a Strongbox is possessed by a Spirit, the monsters that emerge from it will also carry the same Azmeri Spirit while simultaneously gaining additional random Spirits.
Because of Spring Hare's effect, possessed monsters have a 50% chance to revive. Every time they revive, Sacred Sap adds more Spirits to them again. Quickened Flow node then gives you a chance to release Spirits when you kill them.
Cunning Fox increases monster rarity. If you take Hilda's Call of the Spirits Atlas Passive, possessed Rare monsters release Spirits when they die. Therefore, once a Strongbox is possessed by Fox, Rare monsters can become Unique monsters, and killing them releases Spirits, allowing the chain reaction to continue.
Your goal is simply to create as many Strongboxes as possible and have each Strongbox possessed by as many Spirits as possible. When you open these Strongboxes, Divine Orbs will seemingly cover your entire screen.
Tablet Setup
You need to use three Expedition Tablets and one Overseer Tablet, or 4 Overseer Tablets.
The goal when choosing Tablet modifiers is to maximize the number of Strongboxes and Azmeri Spirits. The number of Azmeri Spirits determines the chance of encountering a Sacred Spirit, while the number of Strongboxes determines how much you can earn after hitting a Sacred Spirit.
Required modifiers for Expedition Tablets:
- Expeditions contain 2 buried Strongboxes;
- Map has increased chance to contain Azmeri Spirits.
Required modifiers for Overseer Tablets:
- Map contains 2 additional Azmeri Spirits.
When using three Expedition Tablets, two Expeditions will appear in the map. When using four Tablets in City Biome, the effects of Tablet modifiers are increased by 54%.
In simple terms, this setup gives you two Expeditions in a single map, with around nine Strongboxes from each Expedition, for approximately 18 Strongboxes in total. You will also get a good number of Azmeri Spirits.
Map Selection
For maps, you need to use Tier 15 eight-mod maps and maximize monster rarity as much as possible.
Only Rare and Unique monsters can be possessed by Spirits. Higher monster rarity makes the chain reaction smoother, allowing more monsters to revive, gain additional random Spirits, and generate more loot.
Without sufficiently high monster rarity, the chain reaction may fail to run smoothly even after a Sacred Spirit appears, eventually forcing you to abandon the map. Therefore, try to use maps with close to 100% increased monster rarity.
Ezomyte City
City Biome is chosen to gain stronger Tablet modifier effects and allow the use of four Tablets. Grass Biome is selected because it increases the chance for Azmeri Spirits to become Sacred Spirits by around 50%.
The advantage of Ezomyte City is that it provides the benefits of both City Biome and Grass Biome, which is why this strategy is mainly run there.
Map Enhancements
For map enhancements, you can choose 200% Delirium, or Sacred Bloom Wildwood. Both methods work well. 200% Delirium provides better loot and additional rewards from Delirium, although it is more complicated to run compared with Wildwood.
Master of the Atlas
For Master of the Atlas, both Doryani and Hilda can work. However, if your build is particularly powerful, Hilda is the better fit. If you are more concerned about surviving, choose Doryani.
If you choose Doryani, Spring Hare will be more useful because the map becomes Irradiated, granting higher monster rarity and other modifiers while making monster effects stronger. However, encountering Cunning Fox may force you to abandon the map.
If you choose Hilda, both Spirits are worth running because Fox chain reaction depends on Hilda's Call of the Spirits node.
Preparation
Since each map can drop a large amount of PoE2 currency, the game may become extremely laggy if your hardware is not particularly strong. You will also need a strict Loot Filter to hide lower-value currency items, such as Exalted Orbs, otherwise your inventory will fill up very quickly.
You also need to use currency to roll Strongboxes yourself and prepare Cryptic Keys and Omens of the Hunt. Cryptic Keys allow you to open a Strongbox one additional time, while Omens of the Hunt are used to release Spirits when opening Strongboxes.
This strategy offers extremely high returns and can even cause severe performance issues. However, if you can run it successfully in PoE 2 Patch 0.5.5, each map can potentially generate dozens or even hundreds of Divine Orbs.
In Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.5, Ancestral Warrior Totem Shaman is a popular choice that combines tankiness with the ability to complete all content.
This totem build, centered around Sunder as its core damage dealer, has an extremely low skill ceiling. Simply place totems and keep moving to easily handle most combat scenarios, making it suitable for challenging Grand Expedition, high Delirium maps, Pinnacle bosses, and various endgame content such as Simulacrum.
Starting Budget and Hard Gear Requirements
This build requires approximately 100 Divine Orbs to start. It's not recommended to force this transition before you have sufficient resources. The core reason lies in the mandatory requirement for two function-bound pieces of equipment:
Redflare Conduit Anchorite Garb
Must carry Corruption affix: Gain a Power Charge every second if you haven't lost Power Charges recently. This chest piece is the starting point for the entire build's energy recharge cycle; without this corruption affix, the entire cycle cannot be initiated.
Flush Crucible Diamond
must include a variant of Resonance keystone passive skill. This keystone passive converts gained Power Charge into Endurance Charge, a necessary resource for Ancestral Warrior Totem to function.
Besides the two bound pieces of equipment mentioned above, weapon quality is equally crucial. This build's damage primarily comes from gem level and the weapon's base physical damage; therefore, it is recommended to prioritize high physical DPS two-handed hammer weapons.
Furthermore, unique attributes such as Rite of Passage, The Fall of the Axe, and Kalandra's Touch can further enhance overall strength, but are not absolutely necessary; players can gradually acquire them based on their own circumstances.
If your own resources are insufficient but wish to experience the full gameplay of this build as soon as possible, you can buy PoE 2 currency to quickly replenish resources to obtain equipment with specific attributes that meet the build's requirements, thereby completing the core configuration faster.
Core Mechanics Analysis
Power Charge - Endurance Charge Loop
The core operating logic of this build is a stable Charge conversion chain. Redflare Conduit Anchorite Garb continuously generates Power Charge through Corruption affix, while the Resonance Keystone converts the acquired Power Charge into Endurance Charge.
Ancestral Warrior Totem relies on Endurance Charge to be summoned. This loop ensures a continuous supply of totem summoning resources and is the foundation of the build.
Totem Summoning and Health Regeneration
Another important survival mechanism for this build is the health regeneration provided by Totem summoning. Each Totem summon restores a significant amount of health to the character. Therefore, in environments where continuous damage is taken, frequent Totem summoning not only maintains damage output but also serves as an important means of healing.
Rage Stacking
Shaman Ascendancy provides the necessary Rage acquisition and utilization capabilities for this build.
Through the Mana Regeneration → Rage Generation conversion mechanism provided by Ascendancy, characters can continuously acquire Rage using Mana Regeneration, thus reducing their reliance on Eternal Rage buff.
A large amount of Rage not only increases damage output but also synergize with other defensive mechanisms, allowing Rage to serve both offensive and defensive purposes.
Defense System
Ancestral Warrior Totem Shaman, through high-armor shields and stacking the "increased defenses from equipped shield" affix, can easily achieve nearly 90% physical damage reduction. Shaman Ascendancy also provides additional defensive stacks, combined with the life regeneration from Totem summons, giving the character extremely high survivability in high-intensity combat.
0.5.5 Patch Key Updates
Patch 0.5.5 brings two significant improvements to this build, further enhancing its strength.
Jiquani's Soul Core of Quaking
This is a new Soul Core added in PoE 2 0.5.5, providing +1 level to all Slam Skill Gems.
Since our core damage skill, Sunder, is a Slam skill, and this build benefits greatly from skill gems, Jiquani's Soul Core of Quaking directly boosts Sunder's damage output.
It is recommended to socket it together with Perfect Iron Rune. Together, they form a crucial enhancement combination for this build's weapon slots; Jiquani's Soul Core of Quaking provides the gem level, while Perfect Iron Rune further enhances the weapon's base stats and damage output.
Atziri's Soul Core of Vitality
This Soul Core provides a 1% increased Maximum Life for each Corrupted Item Equipped. This means that when the character equips as many corrupted items as possible, they not only benefit from the corruption affix itself but also gain a significant maximum life bonus.
For gear that has already incurred significant investment and for which you don't want to directly use Vaal Orbs and risk random outcomes, consider using Vaal Infusers for corruption. These infusers don't cause corruption on the first use, but subsequent uses have a high probability of inflicting corruption, and they don't interfere with existing affixes on the gear, making them a relatively controllable corruption method.
Skill Gem Configuration
Main DPS
Ancestral Warrior Totem is the core gem of this build, paired with Sunder as the primary slam skill, handling the majority of the damage output.
For secondary gems, adjustments can be made based on the final gear and skill gem levels. Common configurations include Urgent Totems III, Heft, Heavy Swing, and Rigwald's Ferocity, primarily focusing on increasing the totem's attack speed, single-hit damage, and overall DPS.
Secondary DPS
Shockwave Totem is mainly used in boss fights, responsible for applying additional AoE and DoT, and providing some supplementary single-target damage. When facing a single boss, generally placing Shockwave Totem in advance is sufficient to apply damage; there's no need to continuously summon large numbers of Totem like a main DPS build.
Defense and Buffs
Magma Barrier is primarily used to provide additional block chance, further enhancing the character's defensive capabilities. Use Time of Need when clearing maps to provide health regeneration and manage curses.
In scenarios requiring higher DPS, such as Pinnacle boss fights and Trials of Sekhemas, Berserk can be used for stronger burst damage.
Overall, Ancestral Warrior Totem Shaman build in Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 is more suitable for players who already have sufficient resources and want to experience a high-survivability totem playstyle. Its advantages lie in its relatively simple operation, flexible output methods, and good adaptability to various endgame content.
However, the high start-up cost and core gear requirements also mean it's not suitable as a low-budget progression build. After completing the core equipment and mechanics setup, you can gradually upgrade your weapons, equipment, and gem levels according to your budget to achieve a more stable endgame experience.
As the initial excitement surrounding 0.5.5 league update begins to fade, Path of Exile 2 players are shifting their focus from the new content to the game's unresolved core issues.
With the official 1.0 launch just around the corner, roughly two months away, the community is eager for the development team to address fundamental flaws before the full release, ensuring the game makes a compelling debut.
Among these issues, the state of melee builds and the overall combat experience have remained central topics of discussion within the community.
Since the launch of Early Access, melee gameplay in PoE 2 has certainly seen improvements regarding defensive mechanics and damage output; however, compared to ranged playstyles, such as spells, bows, and grenades, melee combat still faces significant limitations.
In this article, we analyze the current predicament facing PoE 2 melee builds, examining the pain points regarding defense and damage output, and look ahead to potential future adjustments for melee playstyles.
Melee currently lags behind ranged in PoE 2
If you have consumed time playing Path of Exile 2 and are familiar with both melee and ranged playstyles, you have likely noticed a stark contrast in the experience they offer.
This disparity lies not merely in the mechanics of play, but in the ultimate results achieved. Overall, spellcasters and other ranged builds hold a dominant advantage in terms of both map-clearing efficiency and survivability.
For instance, ranged builds centered on Spark skill allow players to unleash massive damage over a wide area while moving at high speed, instantly wiping out enemies before they can even get close.
Additionally, crossbow builds benefit from exceptional critical hit scaling, while grenade builds leverage powerful skill synergies and high base damage to create devastating damage output chains.
In contrast, traditional melee classes or builds relying on maces or two-handed weapons often feel clunky and fragile during combat; because they must engage enemies head-on, they are forced to absorb the full brunt of direct physical and elemental attacks.
While Path of Exile 2 currently features some effective melee playstyles, such as Monk, many of their skills possess semi-ranged characteristics and extended strike ranges; furthermore, the class boasts high mobility and the ability to rapidly close the gap to enemies.
In other words, the reason these standout melee classes or builds feel so good to play is essentially because their gameplay incorporates ranged or mid-range combat elements, rather than relying on the inherent advantages of true melee combat.
Imbalance within melee builds
The fact that the overall experience pales in comparison to ranged playstyles is only one reason for the decline of melee builds in PoE 2; in reality, there is also significant imbalance within the melee category itself.
Within the classification of melee skills in Path of Exile 2, there is a stark disparity in gameplay experience between single-target striking skills and AoE / slam strike skills.
Although single-target skills are often designed with superior damage scaling and a higher damage ceiling against individual targets, they struggle in actual combat due to a lack of AoE damage, making it impossible to effectively clear out swarms of enemies.
Moreover, many enemy types in PoE 2 move extremely fast. Since single-target skills lack mechanisms for instantly dashing into close range, players often find themselves in the frustrating position of desperately chasing enemies without being able to land a hit.
Consequently, almost all melee players gravitate toward area/slam strike skills. These skills leverage wide hit zones and crowd-control effects to efficiently clear trash mobs or stun bosses, thereby boosting the efficiency of farming PoE 2 currency.
Over-reliance on skill gem levels
Another systemic issue facing melee builds in Path of Exile 2 is that damage output relies too heavily on skill gem levels, which in turn leads players to neglect weapon crafting.
More specifically, in most current melee gear setups, the damage boost provided by skill gem levels far outweighs that of other attributes. As a result, when selecting gear, players are compelled to prioritize items that feature modifiers increasing melee skill levels.
This creates a trade-off: if you want to maximize damage scaling from skill levels, you might have to sacrifice other crucial utility stats like resistances, health, or attack speed, and for melee builds, efficient enemy elimination is essential for survival.
This dynamic also diminishes the value of high-base-damage weapons for melee builds; even a mace with near-perfect base stats might ultimately underperform compared to a standard weapon that grants +3 to melee skill levels.
Issues with skill control feel
While yield is one factor in a build's overall value, the feel of the skill during actual combat is another critical consideration. This is evident across various melee skills and mechanics in PoE 2.
Take Earthquake for example. When paired with the right support gems and gear, the skill boasts incredible damage scaling in the endgame. However, the issue lies in the time and delay between initiating the attack and the subsequent aftershock explosion.
This means that if you use Earthquake in high-tier maps or boss fights requiring frequent movement, the delay could leave you vulnerable to being swarmed by enemies.
In fact, similar issues affect skills like Rolling Slam; its fixed attack duration makes it difficult to integrate smoothly into fast-paced combat.
That said, if you have played Gemling Legionnaire, you might have noticed that its mechanics can significantly boost attack speed, effectively compressing the delay associated with certain melee skills.
However, we believe this shouldn't be the primary solution for addressing melee skill delays, nor should Gemling Legionnaire be nerfed as a result. Instead, the baseline fluidity of melee skills themselves should be improved.
Potential optimization strategies
Duelist has already been confirmed as the first class to be added to PoE 2 in version 1.0, and it brings distinct melee characteristics. This signals the arrival of a host of new melee mechanics, skills, and weapons, which will help break the mold of currently restricted melee playstyles.
On the other hand, it would be best for the development team to optimize melee builds before the 1.0 launch, specifically addressing the issue where they are easily interrupted or knocked down while dashing to close the distance, so that melee players can exert greater control over the pace of combat.
Undoubtedly, there are still many hurdles to overcome to ensure Path of Exile 2 is absolutely perfect at launch, but the issues surrounding the melee playstyle should be prioritized; after all, if ranged builds dominate from the outset, the long-term outlook for the full release does not look promising.
