My Feedbacks On Ruthless Mode In POE The Forbidden Sanctum

Dec 26, 2022

Everyone should know that Path of Exile The Forbidden Sanctum launched a Ruthless mode suitable for hardcore players. To be honest, I was a softcore player at the beginning. But after actually experiencing the mode, I experienced the fun of it. The following are my specific feelings.

One link Split Steel would do well to complete Act 1. In terms of instant gameplay, I definitely need to be more thoughtful than the base game. Having enemies close at this stage of the game feels very risky. All in all, I didn't have too many issues, and while Merveil is tedious, she doesn't feel much harder than the base game.

The main thing I realized right away in Act 1 is that the choices you make for this mode's quest rewards matter more. As you can imagine, you could make too many bad decisions and end up with an almost rigid character. I think it's a great addition to Ruthless because it makes me feel especially good when my choices actually work in my favor. At the end of this post, I'll leave more general thoughts on gear upgrades, decision making, and ruthless drop reward structures. My thoughts on these questions evolved throughout the course of the game.

Splitting Steel skill

Once in Act 2, I switched to Earth Shatter and Intimidating Cry. The damage isn't much better than Splitting Steel, but the aoe is great so I stuck with it. That being said, in terms of defense, the Splitting Steel has a much higher range. Most of my deaths happened while I was using Earth Shatter. However, upon picking up Seismic Cry , the damage starts to expand much more due to the increased explosion rate of the Earth Shatter pylons. Around this time I too prematurely joined the ax nodes, which penalized me for a while when I couldn't find a decent ax upgrade. The Vaal Oversoul is not memorable at all for me, it's too simple, because I know the fight very well, and the attacks are very telegraphed.

Act 3 is where some of the most memorable moments of my game begin. The first was General Glacius, and I was completely caught off guard by his difficulty. Very low elemental resistances so I had to run away from him constantly while dropping Earth Shatter spikes in front of me that exploded when he ran over them. I died a few times, and the fights lasted longer than 5 minutes, and no previous fights have come close to this difficulty.

I had dropped an Ancestral Call Support, so when I unlocked the library, I chose to switch to Boneshatter. I cleared Act 3 with Ancestral Call Support, but removed it for tanky enemies (so still one link single target). Piety isn't too hard as I have some firepower against melee form and can dodge ice form projectiles with no problem. However, Dominus picks up where Gravicius left off, which is very challenging. Dominus' start is absolutely brutal, I think I'd have to die at least 5 times to clear the unique mobs in front of him. After clearing the riff, I was able to clear the fight without issue. It's worth noting, however, that this will require respect for his technique, a slow but steady process.

Shortly after starting Act 4, I dropped close combat support, which is where I think my game starts to stray from the average Ruthless experience. Giving two links to a single target makes the Ruthless start feel more like the main game. From this point on, I've had almost no issues with the gameplay, aside from the famous bosses (until halfway through Act 9), which always require respect for their mechanics, and patience to get through. Before that, most enemies demanded more respect if I didn't want to risk my life.

Earthshatter

During Act 4, I go back and finish the normal lab. I thought Izaro would be a great challenge, but I don't have any issues with any of the 3 lab difficulties, they just take longer. It's worth mentioning that I've grown uber lab over the years in multiple roles, so I'm very happy with all of Izaro's mechanics. While fighting Izaro, I was rarely hit by anything other than a low damage ability like the machine gun green ball. Other players may have more problems with Labs than I do, however, I think many PoE players have farmed labs at one point or another, so labs could use some tweaks to make it harder.

Act 5 is when I noticed I started dropping more rare and magic items. So far, I wear a lot of white gear that prioritizes high armor, and my goal is to always have 60%+ phys reduction to help with Boneshatter and melee. Between Acts 5 and 10, I usually had good weapon progression due to luck and trading, so I never had a real hitch. If I'm not so lucky, I'm sure there will be bosses asking me to farm for better gear before finishing. It's also worth noting that in Act 3 or 4 I traded a Pride Gem for faster spellcasting support, so having it on top of weapons and links is huge.

In general, the difficulty of Ruthless mode is still very high. If you want to better complete the challenges, then using POE Currency to get some excellent equipment and weapons will be a good choice.
